Abstract

It is generally accepted that Protevangelium Jacobi was originally composed in Greek in the 2nd century; there have been identified around 140 Greek witnesses so far, the earliest of which comes from a papyrus dating to the third or early fourth century (the celebrated Papyrus Bodmer).  The main corpus of the Greek MSS witnesses, on the other hand, are dated to the tenth century or later. The work survives also in Syriac, Armenian, Georgian, Coptic, Ethiopic, Arabic, Irish and Old Church Slavonic. There are no extant Latin MSS detected so far, but the Irish tradition presupposes the existence of a Latin Vorlage.  The focal point of the presentation will be the Slavonic renditions of Protevangelium Jacobi which survived in more than 170 manuscripts. The composition has also impacted the iconography and folklore. The language of religious art, along with its interpretations in oral tradition, will be discussed at length.
