Talk by Gruia Badescu, 2024-2025 Paris IAS Fellow, as part of the "Memory and Populism from the Margins" conférence organized by the MEMPOP Project (founded by the European Research Council).
This talk focuses on the tensions between nationalism and regionalism in the post-Habsburg urban space. It examines how imperial legacies are mobilized in recent transformations in Alba Iulia (Romania) and Rijeka (Croatia), highlighting often exclusionary and competing memory projects.
The event is part of the Memory and Populism from the Margins conference, which examines how memory narratives are co-opted by populist regimes, with insights from global peripheries.
