Presentation

The idea that humans have ‘free will’ goes back to classical times, and continues to underpin modern society.  However, the idea seems inconsistent with modern mechanistic neuroscience.   The first experimental investigation of this tension, by Benjamin Libet just over 40 years ago, continues to generate scientific and philosophical controversy.  This project aims at a broad intellectual history of the Libet experiment, focusing on its precursor topics, its afterlife, and its wider context.
