Workshop organized by Nathan Perl-Rosenthal (2017-2018 Paris IAS fellow) and Antoine Lilti (EHESS)

Presentation

The question of the relationship between enlightenment and revolution in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries is a very old one. Since 2000, the study of both the age of enlightenment and the age of revolution have been renewed by simultaneous turns towards more transnational perspectives—often described as “Atlantic.” Yet relatively little attention has been paid to connecting these Atlantic visions of the enlightenment with new understandings of the Atlantic age of revolution, or to the related problem of integrating these Atlantic approaches with revolutionary historiographies that remain stubbornly national in orientation. This journée offers reflections on these challenges from multiple angles, including analyses of the history of the field, presentations of case studies, and discussions of historical method.
