Presentation

The catalog contains a typology of Sogdian coin legends and countermarks, grouped by chronology, dynasties, and regions of their origin, including Samarkand, Bukhara, Southern Sogd, the Syr Darya regions (Fergana, Ustrushana, Chach, Otrar), Semirechie, as well as Khorezm and Tokharistan – Bactria. Each coin type is represented by an inventory card, which summarizes details on dating, origin, and a description of the coin, translation, and transliteration of the legend. In addition, the cards contain data on the history of the study of a particular coin type and various comments. This study aims to systematize the materials accumulated over the past 40 years. It is intended for specialists in numismatics, archeology, Iranian and Turkic studies, students of history, and all those interested in the history of ancient, antique, and early medieval Sogd.
