Decomposing Discrimination towards ex-combatants and victims of conflict

The project seeks to develop a refined computational approach based on the data collected in Restrepo-Plaza and Fatas (2021 and 2023). The goal is to quantitatively distinguish between preference-based and belief-based discrimination. Directly comparing discrimination levels poses challenges, particularly in unconditional cooperation decisions where participants' beliefs about their counterparts' contributions are implicit. However, the project approach implies inferring implicit beliefs by analyzing participants' decisions across both unconditional and conditional cooperation scenarios.

As a result, the project will devise an experimental methodology to systematically and cost-effectively measure both forms of discrimination, both within controlled laboratory settings and in real-world field environments. This approach aims to enhance understanding of the intricate dynamics driving discriminatory behavior.
