Facing Coronavirus in China : responses and challenges
Lecture by Xiaobo Zhang, professor of Economics at the National Development School of Peking University in China, organised by the European Institute for Chinese Studies (Eurics), with the support of the Paris IAS.
In early 2020, a new type of coronavirus epidemic (COVID-19) emerged suddenly and spread steadily from China’s Wuhan City, Hubei Province, disrupting China’s social order and economic order. In response, the government shut downed Wuhan City. Other cities have subsequently adopted strict measures to control the epidemic outbreak. Consequently the production activities of many enterprises in China were halted. China faces a tradeoff between public health and the resumption of production. The presentation will discuss the resumption of production as well as the different challenges enterprises face, drawing from the Enterprise Survey for Innovation and Entrepreneurship in China (ESIEC) conducted in 2018 in combination with follow-up interviews in the middle February.
