Presentation

Political opposition to changes in the urban environment, especially housing densification and the expansion of mobility infrastructure like bus and bike lanes, slows progress towards more sustainable cities. Cities across the world are making necessary changes at very uneven rates, with some, like Paris, transforming their streets in the span of a few years, while others, like Los Angeles, making only very limited interventions.

This two-part event (morning and lunch at IEA, afternoon at Paris Cite) will explore the state of knowledge and practice on the local politics of the urban environmental transition (i.e. housing densification and the conversion of street space to public transport and active transportation) in different European cities. Invited researchers will discuss Barcelona, Zurich, and Paris in order to distill insights into how these cities have achieved progress. The morning event is intended as a research workshop, whereas the afternoon event will be open to the public.
