Presentation
Contemporary philosophical literature has given prominence to the idea that acts of speech can be characterized, even defined, by certain norms that would constitute them. The conference is devoted to this idea of a constitutive rule, and to the application that can be made of it in the particular case of the act of assertion. In particular, the following questions will be addressed:
- Are there constitutive rules (as opposed to simply regulatory rules) and how can they be characterized?
- Are speech acts governed by such rules?
- Among the norms that govern the act of assertion (standard of truth, knowledge, sincerity, justification...), which are intended to be said to constitute this type of act?
- What are the respective merits of normative and non-normative approaches to speech acts in general, and assertion in particular?
- Is there a fundamental difference between acts such as promise, order or permission, which create rights and duties, and assertion, or can it be conceived along the lines of them?
