Alignment, Innovation, and Regulation -- Paradoxes in AI Governance
Talk by Michael Livermore, 2023-2024 Paris IAS Fellow, as part of the "Rennes School of Business Summit" dedicated to "Sustainable Transformation".
Over 20 renowned researchers and key figures from right around the globe will convene to tackle the major challenges of sustainable transformation through the prism of interdisciplinarity and intersectoriality. An event introduced by the Centre for Unframed Thinking (CUT), the first business school-based institute for advanced studies.
How do we fund transitions? How do we innovate to benefit the climate? How can we rethink capitalism? How do we put artificial intelligence to good use? How do we reinvent regional and international cooperation? How do we transform production models?
Plenary sessions, workshops and masterclasses will address the major social issues of today and tomorrow, through a multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral programme.
Michael Livermore 's abstract
The explosive growth of AI capabilities in recent years raises profound questions concerning the future role of AI in all aspects of society, from politics, to science and culture. The US has mostly pursued an "innovation-forward" approach with little explicit role for government in regulating AI development, while the EU has proposed a heavy government hand to attempt to shape AI technologies in line with societal values. The talk will explore difficulties in both approaches and explore how AI raises core challenges to existing governance models."
